The challenge
Patients and providers can leave the same visit with different understandings of what happened. The client wanted training that would help care teams recognize communication barriers and examine assumptions about the people they treat.
How we approached it
We gathered experiences from eye-care providers and patients, including Black and Latino patients. Patients and providers then responded to narrated care scenarios and reflected on moments when communication broke down.
Their input helped shape a four-module continuing education course with reflection exercises and practical communication guidance.
What the research informed
The course brought patient experiences into provider learning platforms. It addressed plain-language explanations, assumptions during care, and ways to speak directly with patients when an interpreter is present.
